Kyrylo Aleksandrov’s "The Stray House" on the Foundation Screen

Throughout November, visitors can watch a recording of a performance in which the artist attempts to become part of another community.

The film documents a dance with a swarm of bees that settled in a tree near the artist’s studio after roadworks disrupted its original location. Born in Mariupol, Kyrylo Aleksandrov approached this situation as an attempt to establish a relationship with another community of living beings, while also reflecting on the experience of being forced to leave one’s home. Gradually moving closer to the swarm, he explores the boundaries of identification, otherness and coexistence. The encounter culminates in a bee sting, which becomes the natural conclusion of his attempt to draw nearer to the bee community. The performance serves as a reminder that, despite empathy and a desire for connection, he remains an outsider to the swarm, and that fully becoming another being is ultimately impossible.
