Zbigniew Rogalski
b. 1974, Dąbrowa Białostocka
Painter, photographer, creator of installations. A graduate of the University of Arts in Poznań, he co-founded the Magisters duo with Hubert Czerepok. The artists arranged absurd incidents documented in photographs and videos. Rogalski’s paintings weave between abstraction and realism, their primary focus on the creative process and the painting medium as such. Rogalski is fond of exploring the issue of perception and the physiology of seeing, his oeuvre filled with allusions to and playing on spatial illusions. Winner of the Eugeniusz Geppert Competition in 2001. He lives and works in Warsaw.

In his work as a painter, Zbigniew Rogalski focuses on the themes of basic emotions, feelings, and interpersonal relations. Euro depicts a domestic scene from the early days of a young couple’s shared life. A simple manufacture of euro banknotes has been set up on the carpet. The couple are the artist and his then partner, now wife Karolina, engaging in the laborious process of replicating a pattern on paper cuttings. Painting about painting is combined with painting about forging. The piece saw daylight one year after the euro was made part of the global currency exchange, which brought its swift appreciation coupled with a slump in the exchange rate of the dollar, former symbol of wealth in the collective conscious.
