Wojciech Gilewicz
b. 1974, Biłgoraj
Painter, photographer, creator of videos and artistic actions. He studied painting, graphic arts and sculpture at the art academies in Poznań and Warsaw (in Prof. Leon Tarasewicz’s studio). His paintings “impersonate” building wall sections, windowsills and pavement slabs, remaining nearly imperceptible to the viewer. He leaves his works in public space, exposing them to the elements or interference by random individuals. He creates painted replicas of scraps of reality, placing them in a habitat they will blend in with. He explores issues of blurred borders between the world and its representation in art, and of conditioning in human perception in video and photographic projects. He lives and works in Warsaw and New York.

In the autumn of 2003, Wojciech Gilewicz placed four paintings in assorted venues in Warsaw’s public space. Several months later, two were lost, one placed by the artist on a kiosk repainted by a newsagent unaware it was part of an experiment. Three years later, the artist transferred two replicas of his Warsaw pieces to Łódź, again arranging them to blend in with the environment. Gilewicz performed artistic interventions around his paintings to enhance the overall illusory effect. Binary City is accompanied by three photographs of the locations where the paintings were placed.
