Maurycy Gomulicki

b. 1969, Warsaw

Photographer, creator of objects, installations and videos, painter. A graphic arts graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, he also studied at Universitat de Barcelona and the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. His work balances on the borderline between low and high culture. Gomulicki can be recognised by his trademark colour, pink, which he uses frequently in his works, approaching themes as a cultural anthropologist. He is inspired by bazaar aesthetics, erotic magazines and objects from the times of socialist Poland, as well as sports attire designs. He lives and works in Warsaw.

Sequences in Colour. Red

1997, cibachrome, 34.5 × 50.5 cm

Ever since his legendary 2006 exhibition Pink Not Dead! at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, pink has become Maurycy Gomulicki’s recognisable trademark. While usually favouring candy shades, in the erotic Sequences in Colour photography series the artist experiments with a vivid red. After overexposing his film, Gomulicki applied the cross-processing technique: a reverse order of applying chemicals when processing the negative. The switch produced intense colour, contrast, and texture for all items photographed, the shapes of shells, plants, and glass piping all becoming erotic in nature. The artist spins a tale of eroticism, fulfilment, intimate games, and sensuality.
