Anna Ostoya
b. 1978, Kraków
Creator of collages, sculptures, photographs and installations; painter. She studied at the Parsons School of Art and Design in Paris and the Städelschule in Frankfurt on Main. Her work is best expressed in exhibitions where she displays all possible forms of art: minimalist furniture items, spatial and abstract forms, audio recordings. She combines painting with photography, creating diverse works, from geometric abstractions to realist renderings, or blending one with the other, as in the case of Kiss (2016), depicting the moment of the notorious passionate kiss shared by two communist leaders. Her work echoes the interwar avant-garde, constructivism, and Kazimir Malevich. She explores tropes such as violence, war, the history of the avant-garde, and information overload, merging them with knowledge of literature, philosophy, political and social sciences, mass culture and the internet. She participated in Manifesta 7 in Rovereto in 2008. She lives and works in New York and Kraków.
Landscapes and Monochromes '09
FSP ING 0112
Landscapes and Monochromes ’09 are a series of collages of diagrams and newspaper clippings of economic statistics on canvas. The artist used periodicals from diverse parts of the world. The images have taken on hues of faded pinks, greys and blues typical for individual magazines. Combined with great precision, the clippings allow individual diagrams to be read and interpreted. While information is visible, its sense remains elusive. On the one hand, these pieces may be perceived as abstracts referencing the real world with the use of economic analyses. On the other, they are close to minimalist and conceptual art, often as not strongly politicised. Collages take on extra meaning through references to specific socio-economic circumstances they were created in. The date used in the title brings the global recession to mind. The series was shown for the first time in 2009 at the Financial District exhibition as part of the ISCP in New York.
