Jadwiga Sawicka’s photographs are an illustration of grappling with meaning, form, value, and beauty in art. The 1.5-litre bottles, filled with various liquids, have been stripped of their labels and marked instead with handwritten inscriptions such as “faith,” “hope” and “good.” The artist is troubled by the multiplicity and uncertainty of choices: it’s impossible to focus on one thing because another one is already looming round the corner. Viewing these photographs, we cannot cease to consider Sawicka as a painter. The series was created at a time when the artist had ultimately abandoned her earlier expressionistic style for intriguing images reduced to a pink background and thick black lettering.
