The world of Wilhelm Sasnal’s painting has long become far from obvious. His work reaches deep into memory, and not just individual memory, but also collective historical memory. This art has the power of an anarchist manifesto. In Untitled (The Moon), based on an archival image of the lunar landing module, we sense the seriousness of the “giant leap for mankind.” Sasnal has developed a taste for representing historic events and conveying them in an enigmatic, ambiguous form. The visible brush strokes and reduced detail suggest that The Moon is a documentary work, created in a similar fashion as a photographic image.
