Critics call Jarosław Modzelewski a painter of the icons of everyday life. His works depict ordinary events, simple gestures, such as looking out of the window, taking a walk, meeting people. The stories take place in simplified, symbolic settings. Such is also The Bench – an image of the interior of a church. Using the simplest, most economical means, the painter represents a metaphoric, unique space. He uses flat and decorative modelling, and emphasises the picture’s austerity by employing the historical technique of egg tempera.
