“Taking as his point of departure the excrement and garbage of contemporary visual and material culture (in the literal sense, as well), Matecki produces painterly beings – paintings, objects and installations – representing the highest degree of sophistication,” read the notes accompanying Matecki and Paweł Susid’s joint exhibition at Poznań’s Pies gallery (later shown at the Raster in Warsaw). We do not know where the photograph embedded in thick pink paint comes from – is it a fragment of a comic book or perhaps an image from an illustrated women’s magazine? Matecki’s art, however, is not about guessing “what is in the picture” but about formal effects – this time, these include the contrast between a high-detail image and the thick texture of paint.
