As the artist says, it is preferable to work in series. With every new canvas that returns to the same motif – the eyes, the gaze, and the fact of being observed – the artist borrows various formal strategies. She manipulates the scale of the objects, the composition, and the observer’s perspective.
In Eyes, the viewer is caught by the picture – there is a third pair of eyes involved here. The composition suggests that there is an observer of whom the other two figures are oblivious. This is a claustrophobic depiction in which the artist attempts to capture the power of eye contact and break through the confrontational nature of the picture’s oneiric atmosphere. The artist has confessed that the palette composition was inspired by the look of David Lynch’s films.
