Gierowski’s watercolour pieces are like notes from his experiments in painting – the brush strokes are meant to make visible the play of light, the course of the individual lines in a streak of colour, the way the different colours affect and influence each other. The paintings are not just compositional masterpieces but also a reflection of the artist’s fascination with Eastern calligraphy. Filling the bottom part of the composition dating from 1995 is a delicate mist confined by a red rectangle. The upper part is heavier, with small red oblong forms rendered using differentiated brushstrokes on a blue background. Gierowski presents two possibilities of executing a painting in the vein of lyrical abstraction.
