Alicja Bielawska makes installations, objects, and drawings. Her focus is on everyday objects and materials, linking them with recollections. Her spatial relations often build tension between materials and forms, pairing fabrics and metal frames or spreading brightly-colored translucent drapes in a space to affect perception. She also works with everyday materials, such as floor panels or linoleum, whose unusual application has a powerful impact on the viewer's imagination.
Drawings are a separate sphere of Alicja Bielawska's work. Though they are often created in relation to spatial forms, they are not sketches. It happens that they accompany the process of preparing another project, becoming its consummation or essence. As in the case of the installations, their intense colors are important. Some are exercises that recall those drawn by children as manual training. Bielawska uses colored paper, chalk, and construction paper to allude to childhood. Different spheres of the viewer's imagination come into play depending on his/her sensitivity to color, spatial sensibility, and individual memories.
