Zuzanna Janin

BORN 1964, Warszawa

Janin experiments with different, often highly unusual materials, such as candyfloss or fog which she incorporates in her sculptures. Besides sculpting, she is also an author of installations, video installations, photographs, and performance pieces. Her practice builds on the traditions of constructivism and minimalism, but is decisively transformed by emotions and a poetic imagination. Since 2005, Janin has co-run local_30, a gallery at Foksal Street in Warsaw, and since 2010, local_30_warszawa_london in London. She has studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and at the Ecole Cantonale d’Art du Valais, Sierre, Switzerland (ECAV). Her works have been shown at the Istanbul Biennale (1992), the Biennale of Sydney (1993), the Liverpool Biennial (1998), and the FOKUS Łodź Biennale (2010).

Description

The main themes of Zuzanna Janin’s projects are transience and memory. The main themes of Zuzanna Janin's projects are transience and memory. These are the contexts of Follow Me, Change Me, It's Time,  a photo-installation series. Superimposed images of human figures are laminated to form a misty, blurry space, half-sculptural, half-photographic. The piece can be interpreted as an attempt to show the sequence of generations and record the flow of time in its human dimension. Simultaneously, the work integrates the viewer, his reflection inscribing itself in its structure. Follow Me, Change Me, It’s Time is yet another piece in which Janin has used laminate, having previously used it to display bodily materials such as hair, nail clippings and blood.
