Ryszard Grzyb

BORN 1956, Sosnowiec

Ryszard Grzyb is a co-founder of the now-legendary Gruppa, a collective that in the years 1982-1992 made fundamental contributions to the canon of Polish painting. He published his poems, sketches, and drawings in the periodical Oj dobrze już. In the 1980s, he depicted mostly fantastic themes using temperas on cardboard, as well as creating work that served as socio-political commentary. He changed his visual language in the early 90s, opting for a highly decorative, formally simplified style. Grzyb is a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts but completed the first three years of his studies at the State Graduate School for Visual Arts in Wrocław. Besides painting, he writes poetry. He has been published by periodicals such as Nowy Wyraz and Miesięcznik Literacki.

Description

Grzyb’s paintings are inhabited by mythical creatures and fantastic, colourful animals. For the artist, painting is an element, a practice open to magic and the imagination, hence Grzyb treats his work as a  journal in which he records his discoveries, fascinations, and fantasies. The expressive, slightly primitive form is characteristic for Grzyb, for many years a member of "Gruppa", the now-legendary 1980s painting collective. La marche du rhinocéros... vers où? dates from a period when the artist had definitively abandoned socio-political commentary in his work and focused instead on the form and poetics of the message.
