Robert Maciejuk

BORN 1965, Biała Podlaska

Recurring motifs in Robert Maciejuk’s paintings include actual and hypothetical logotypes, imaginary film sets, and characters from children’s cartoons. The artist draws inspiration from the contemporary logosphere, including, in particular, the mass media. In his earlier period, his work referred directly to descriptive perspective and the Renaissance masters' geometry studies, the representations dominated by simplified architectural elements – stairs, canopies, and low walls. Robert Maciejuk is a graduate of the Faculty of Painting, Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he earned his degree from Prof. Stefan Gierowski in 1990. Between 1991-1996, he worked there as assistant professor.

Description

Robert Maciejuk’s artistic strategies bring to mind the patient and time-consuming techniques of the old masters. His works are a kind of modern-day herbarium, a collection of hundreds of signs, symbols, labels, emblems, logotypes. The artist's clash of various symbols can be interpreted as a reference to the information chaos and cultural diversity in our surrounding. With the utmost care of a collector of rare butterflies, Maciejuk gingerly approaches the familiar elements of the visible world. The aviation signs in the painting in question have been subtly altered: the colours are not original, the shapes have been slightly deformed. The original function is lost, replaced by a mysterious visual sequence of forms. The aviation emblems are part of a mischievous game the artist plays with the viewer’s habits.

Description

Maciejuk is the author of a series of works themed around characters from children’s animation from the communist era, including Colargol. In the painting in the Foundation’s collection, Colargol is shown flying through the air, as he did in one of the episodes. The seemingly innocent cartoon figures have been painted in monumental scale. The artist studies simple, everyday images and then subjects them to the viewer’s onlook. Is a realistic representation of an animated character real? Does the reality depicted by Maciejuk really exist or is it mere fiction? – these are only few of many questions the viewer is confronted with.
