Grupa Twożywo

BORN 1998, Warszawa

Twożywo is an artistic duo founded by Krzysztof Sidorek and Mariusz Libel in 1998. They began their careers in 1995 as a trio called Pinokio with Robert Czajka. They are interested first and foremost in public space, construed as a platform of social communication. The formats and media they use – stencils, stickers, posters – are aimed at the ordinary passer-by in communication or information systems such as the internet or the city street. In their projects they use words, or slogans, searching for their most appropriate graphic and semantic representations. They won the Paszport Polityki award in 2006. The duo’s complete archive is available online. They are the authors, with musician Patryk Zakrocki, of the project Captain Europe.

Description

Twożywo's work combines simple graphic symbolism, text, and colour. It surprises the viewer with its humour, mischief, and accurate observation. “Their work is based on textual puns and simple graphics, and also serves as a commentary on current reality, social emotions, and the language of empty political slogans,” Michał Kaczyński and Łukasz Gorczyca of Warsaw's Galeria Raster wrote about Twożywo. Play and Work was shown in billboard form in Warsaw, Wrocław, and Słubice, and in the exhibition Light Work, staged by Raster as part of the Terra Polska festival at Berlin's Kulturbrauerei in 2004.
