Basia Bańda

BORN 1980, Zielona Góra

What makes Basia Bańda’s paintings unique is their format. The artist uses small-format canvases and on them she weaves her intimate, fantastic stories. At the centre of her attention is the subject of the body, of physical experience. Her work is marked by a sharp reduction of motifs – Bańda juxtaposes them, creating short narratives and mini-anecdotes, their titles usually serving as an added point. She also practices photography and is an author of objects. Bańda studied in the Poznań Academy of Fine Arts where she graduated in Prof Jarosław Kozłowski’s studio in 2006. Laureate of the Arteon artist award, fellow of Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarships. She lives and works in Zielona Góra.

Description

The long and nasty winter is gone, it’s time to put away the hats and coats and pull out your spring wardrobe. Basia Bańda’s smallformat piece is an affirmation of spring and vitality. The central figure is encircled by exuberant vines, the black rectangle covering its eyes serves as a metaphor of being “blinded by spring.” Bańda’s work is, to some degree at least, symbolic, the artist coding her reflections and feelings, and while sometimes we succeed in breaking this code, there are instances when its meaning remains deeply hidden.

Description

The painting was made following a long holiday trip that the artist took with her boyfriend in 2009. The return to Poland was a moment marked by melancholy, by a yearning for the exotic and a warmer climate – all this can be found in Jungle. A naked figure with a banana crown, lush tropical vegetation, and resting monkeys convey the idea of a perfect place on earth. The viewer is a voyeur here, the palm leaves and tall grass representing a barrier that must not be crossed. This inaccessible, wonderful world is bathed in sunlight.
